As the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strikes persist, entertainment powerhouses Disney and Netflix are turning to artificial intelligence, initiating a hiring spree in the AI field. This move comes amid the ongoing debate about the role of AI in the industry.

AI hiring amidst industry strikes

The ongoing dispute between the Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild has led to a significant shift in recruitment strategies among major entertainment companies. These companies, including industry titans like Disney and Netflix, are increasingly looking toward artificial intelligence as a potential solution to their current manpower issues. Amid the strikes, they have started posting job listings for positions related to AI.

Disney's AI job postings

Disney is among the companies that have taken a keen interest in AI, as demonstrated by their recent job listings. These job postings, which focus on AI and machine learning, come on the heels of the company's decision to lay off thousands of employees. Some of these roles are within Disney's 'Imagineering' team, responsible for creating attractions at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Netflix's lucrative AI role

Meanwhile, Netflix has also been actively seeking AI talent. The streaming giant has listed an AI product manager position with a salary of up to $900,000. Their job posting emphasizes the importance of machine learning and AI in driving their business innovations, particularly in areas like content creation, personalization, and revenue-centric initiatives.

The trend of hiring for AI roles extends beyond Disney and Netflix. Other significant players in the media industry, such as Amazon, Apple, and Sony, are also advertising a number of positions in the field of AI and machine learning. These roles range from a senior project manager for Amazon's Prime Video, paying up to $300,000, to an AI 'ethics' engineer at Sony.

Disney CEO Bob Iger has openly expressed the company's intention to embrace AI technology. During a town hall meeting last November, he addressed growing concerns over the potential impact of AI on employment in the industry. Iger was unequivocal in his belief that technological advancement is unstoppable and that AI is something the company will inevitably embrace in the future.
