Artificial Intelligence (AI) is ready to revolutionize the gaming world. Animoca Brands' co-founder, Yat Siu, predicts intelligent non-player characters (NPCs), powered by AI, will emerge in 2024. These NPCs could potentially exist in multiple games and 'live forever' on the blockchain.

AI-powered NPCs: A 2024 prediction

The world of gaming is poised for a significant shift, according to Yat Siu, co-founder of Animoca Brands. His prediction: intelligent non-player characters (NPCs), fully powered by artificial intelligence, will show up in 2024. Not just limited to single games, these NPCs could exist across multiple platforms and potentially even 'live forever' on the blockchain. While it seems a futuristic concept, Siu admits the leap to this level of sophistication may take a few years.

Community projects: The AI integration

The use of AI in gaming isn't an entirely new concept. Open-source and community-driven projects have already begun to incorporate AI into their non-player characters. This integration allows players to have real-time interactions with NPCs, beyond the pre-programmed responses. The NPCs can generate replies and even change facial expressions in response to player inputs. Though still relatively unpolished, it's a step towards a more dynamic and immersive gaming experience.

Big Tech's orientation towards AI in gaming

Big Tech isn't far behind in harnessing AI's potential for gaming. NVIDIA released its ACE for Games tool, which allows game developers to imbue NPCs with intelligence through AI natural language processing. Xbox, through its partnership with Inworld AI, is also creating a developer toolset for dynamically generated stories and dialogues. Furthermore, a recent Stanford University study demonstrated the capabilities of AI agents in a virtual town, where they exhibited surprisingly human-like behaviors, further validating the potential of AI in gaming.

The application of AI in gaming extends beyond character interaction. Yield Guild Games, for instance, is using Ethereum’s ERC-6551 token standard to weave AI into their games. This integration allows players to automate tedious and repetitive tasks, often referred to as 'the grind.' By providing instructions to the in-game AI, players can have these tasks completed automatically, freeing up their time and making the gaming experience more enjoyable.
